Skokie, Illinois: A Little About the City, the Drug Addiction Crisis There, and a Solution to It

About the City of Skokie, Illinois: The City Itself in Review, in Summary, and Highlighted

Skokie is a very, very well known, popular, and highly sought after and desired village in Cook County, in the state of Illinois, in the United States.  Its name is historic in and of itself as it of course comes from a Potawatomi word for “marsh”, a hallmark to the swamplands that used to be around that area.  Being that it is basically a high class Chicago suburb, for many years Skokie promoted itself as “The World’s Largest Village”.  Its population, according to the 2010 census report done by the United States Census Bureau, was 64,784 all in all.  The village’s geographic position is pretty ideal too.  Sharing as it does a border with the city of Chicago, Skokie’s streets, like that of many suburbs, are largely a continuation of the Chicago street grid, and it is served by the Chicago Transit Authority, further cementing its connection to the city itself.

As for its history, Skokie was actually originally a German-Luxembourger farming community, but was later settled by a sizable Jewish population, especially after World War II and following a major Jewish migration to the United States.  At its peak in the mid-1960s in fact, 58% of the population was Jewish, the largest percent of any Chicago suburb ever.  In recent years, however, Skokie’s population has become significantly more diverse, and several synagogues and Jewish schools have closed down due to Jews moving to other areas.  However, Skokie still has a very large Jewish population when all is said and done.  The village is also the home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, which opened in northwest Skokie in the year of 2009.

Skokie is a pretty famous urban area.  The Village of Skokie has received national attention twice for court cases decided by the United States Supreme Court.  First, in the mid-1970s, Skokie was at the center of a case concerning the First Amendment right to assemble the group of the National Socialist Party of America, a neo-Nazi group.  Skokie ultimately lost that case when all was said and done.  In 2001, although Skokie was not a direct party to the case, a decision by the village regarding land use led the court to reduce the power of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.  To further its recognition and fame, in October 2013, Skokie was rated #71 on America’s top 100 places to live on the livability.com website.

Skokie also has one of the best economies in the area.  The village’s AAA bond rating attests to strong economic health via prudent fiscal management by its residents.  In the year of 2003, Skokie became the first municipality in the United States ever to succeed in achieving nationally-accredited police, fire, and public works departments, and a Class-1 fire department, per the Insurance Services Office (ISO) ratings.  Almost seemingly as a result of this, in 2003 Money magazine named Skokie one of the 80 fastest-growing suburbs in the U.S.

Besides its very strong manufacturing and retail commerce bases, Skokie’s economy is also bolstered by health sciences jobs.  For example, in the year 2003 Forest City Enterprises announced their re-development of the vacant Pfizer research laboratories, in downtown Skokie, as the Illinois Science and Technology Park, a 23-acre campus of research installations, of chemistry, of genomics, of toxicology laboratories, of clean rooms, of NMR suites, and of conference rooms, etc.).  Later on in 2006, NorthShore University HealthSystem announced installing their consolidated data center operations at the park, adding 500 very high paying jobs to the local economy.  Map maker Rand McNally, private label cooperative Topco and online grocer Peapod are also headquartered in Skokie, furthering as they do the increase of the strength of the overall economy there.

Rehabilitation: The Only Hope for Those Heavily Addicted and Afflicted in and Around Skokie

By far, for those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol in Skokie, the most effective way to treat drug abuse or dependence is through the comprehensive and very involved care offered by a qualified, inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment rehab program offered at the drug rehabilitation Skokie.   It’s true while there are several and truly many different types and styles of drug rehab centers located throughout the entire United States, almost all feature three basic, core elements which include detox first, rehab next, and aftercare last. You can always seek a drug rehab referral in order to start off your journey of recovery in the right way.

Detox is the first step.  For those addicted in Skokie, detox helps them overcome the physical aspect of drug abuse and addiction by allowing the body to be cleansed of harmful drug toxins that are what are causing chemical dependence to begin with.  Often painful and potentially life threatening if not done at an inpatient facility, it is important to do this at a rehab environment where one will be cared for properly.  In medically assisted detox for chemical drug and alcohol dependence, one is actually able to come down off of whatever it is that he or she is addicted to without going through terrible withdrawal symptoms.

For those addicted in Skokie, the drug rehab Skokie is the next step after detox is completed.  Counseling gives the individual a good chance to explore the root causes of their problem on mental and personal levels that lie at the bottom of their addiction, and the counseling also helps them better understand the “triggers” that led to drug abuse and addiction in general. Individual, group or other specialized forms of counseling and therapy are common in rehabilitation facilities and programs as are various electives that help the individual prepare for a sober life outside of the rehab setting.  This is where the true work of recovery takes place, and for those addicted in Skokie, this is usually the step that takes the longest.  Through this type of work and effort the addict gets to the reasons behind their addiction and fully handles it so that it does not have an influence over them anymore.  All in all, inpatient rehab truly is the way to address drug and alcohol addiction once and for all for those addicted in Skokie.
